ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY DEVICE

Design assistive device for our clients.
PRODUCT INTRODUCTION - ABET
Our client has limited mobility and keeps his hand on his thigh. He does have the ability to move his fingers and controls his phone from a mount above the kneecap. Sometimes, the inevitable happens, and his hand falls from his thigh. When this happens, he is able to get his hand back in position by using a table for leverage. But there isn't always a table nearby.
So we began to think of ways to elevate his hand. Through this process, we came to realize that adding to the bulk, and mechanical capacity, of the armchair, would be disruptive to its function in everyday settings. Furthermore, when our client switches to a new wheelchair, our deceive may not be transferable.
This first prototype reflects one of the resting positions of our client's hand. By giving him a more structural place to set his hand, it will allow him to more easily use his phone, and hopefully prevent his hand from falling.
A second prototype takes the shape of a volume around which our client can rest his hand. Indents for the thumb and smaller fingers will keep the hand balances, the interior pocket can act as a storage container for an ID and credit card.
We made an appointment for our typical user, did research of the environment he lives, measured the scale of his objects.
And learned more about his habit.
He has a hard time touching with his thumb when it is at the end, for example pressing delete
